Art Date for One: Lino Carving tiny stamps Art Workshop

Imagine you’ve got a plain, quiet sheet of linoleum, the kind you’d expect to see on a floor, not in an art studio. Then you take a carving tool and start cutting away, little by little, until a hidden picture begins to appear. That’s lino printing, a relief printmaking method where what you carve out stays white, and what you leave raised catches the ink. You roll ink across the surface, press it onto paper or fabric, and suddenly your design arrives in bold lines and strong shapes, clean, graphic, and satisfyingly handmade, with tiny variations that make every print feel alive.

What makes the story cooler is how this simple material became an artist’s playground. In the early 20th century, as linoleum became common, printmakers realized it was smoother and easier to carve than wood, so experimentation took off. And then Picasso showed up and treated it like a serious art form, not a “simple craft.”

In the 1950s and 1960s, he pushed Lino printing forward with his famous reduction linocut approach, printing multiple colors from the same block by carving and printing in stages, turning a humble slab of Lino into a kind of time traveling canvas where each cut permanently changed what could come next.
